In recent years, especially with the adoption of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), the notion of embracing inclusive education as the best approach to ensure that education is accessible to all, has been strongly advocated (Murungi 2015). However, one may argue that this is a flawed interpretation as to what the term entails as “inclusive” applies to all persons and not just to those with disabilities. The term “inclusive education” is fraught with ambiguity. It is this complexity of multiple meanings and in the narrative of what the practice of inclusive education truly entails that renders the full realisation of quality and equitable education for all learners across South African classrooms problematic. Coupled with this, there is a lack of research to provide viable solutions to bridge the gap between the conceptualisation and the implementation of Inclusive Education in schools across the country.

Introduction
Inclusive education is one of the most important prerequisites in modern day education, and with respect to South Africa, it is highly committed towards inclusive education as a transformative strategy to overcome historical inequalities. But the main issue is with respect to how it is interpreted as it is considered as an approach for learners with disabilities rather than for all learners with diverse needs. As a result of this particular approach, there are challenges with respect to translating policy into effective classroom practices.
Problem statement
Inclusive education is highly emphasized in South Africa, but there are issues with its implementation, as teachers often lack adequate training to deliver inclusive practices efficiently. An analysis of the existing literature also indicates that the theories necessary to bridge the gap between conceptualisation and practical implementation is limited. To address this problem, this research is aimed at analyzing the educational transformation agenda for South Africa to ensure success in promoting inclusive education.
Aim
The aim of This research proposal is to analyze the challenges in implementing inclusive education in South Africa and to identify strategies that can be considered by policy makers to bridge the gap between policy and practice.
Research questions
The main research question is to analyze how South African schools can effectively address the issue of inclusive education through practical implementation?
The sub question includes the barriers to teachers in the process of implementing inclusive education in classrooms, and strategies essential to support inclusive education in classrooms.
