Part 1:
Choosing either McDonalds or Nando’s as the case study for your assessment, read the historical background of the organisation. Please only choose ONE of the following two organisations:

After having read the story of the organisation, please address the following:
- The applicability of the concept of metaphor in organisation development work to the type of organisation that you chose out of the 2 options above;
- Briefly describe the different types of metaphors addressed in this module;
- Describe your chosen organisation if it were to be viewed through all eight metaphors covered in this module. Please give a description of how each metaphor applies, in only 2-3 sentences per metaphor.
- Having described the organisation in terms of all eight metaphors, which metaphor/s would you regard as predominant in your chosen organisation? Give practical examples as well as referring to what you see on the website and now know about your chosen organisation to motivate your choice/s.
- Discuss the factors that would have affected the development and design of the organisation based on the needs for organisations to transform in the future VICCAS world and organisational context as indicated by Veldsman (2019) – (Click here) and (Click here) to understand the context that he describes.
Part 2:
Read the following scenario:
In light of the 4/R and future of work, you have been employed as the HR Business Partner at the organisation that you chose in Part 1 of this assessment. Part of the organisation’s HR strategy for organisation development and design includes the following: 10 new roles will be introduced into the organisation over the next 5 years in response to the 4/R need for organisational transformation and maintaining a sustainable competitive advantage. Your manager, the HR Executive, has asked you to design the role of Social Media Customer Experience Manager, which is one of the 10 new roles that are being introduced.
Based on this scenario, please do the following:
- Use Design Template 14: Work Role Profile template_in the prescribed textbook: Veldsman (2019) to design the work role: of Social Media Customer Experience Manager as creatively and realistically as possible.
- In compiling the work role profile, consult HRM literature and OD theory with regards to competencies, skills, job tasks, responsibilities, work context and leadership autonomy that are relevant to the Social Media Customer Experience Manager.
Please use the following definitions as guidelines when responding to Assessment 2:
- Analyse – Break an issue down into distinct components and show how effectively the parts relate to each other.
- Describe – give a detailed and accurate account
- Discuss/review – investigate and examine by argument, sift and debate giving reasons for and against.

Metaphor in organisations development
Metaphors are significant in allowing an understanding of traditional realities. They can be applied in the given case scenario of Nando or McDonalds to better understand their culture, structure and people interaction.
Different types of metaphors
The different types of metaphors that are advised in this module include machine, organism, brain, culture, political system, flux and transformation, instrument of domination etc.
Analysis of the selected organisation through metaphors
The organisation selected for the purpose of analysis is Nando. In respect to the metaphor machine, Nando has structured processes that allows it to achieve consistency in its food quality. The organism metaphor is evident in the sense that the company adapts menu and strategies according to the requirements in the local market. The metaphor of the brain is evident in the form of Nando emphasizing on innovation, creativity and learning. Team culture is highly supported, and the management and leaders interact with each other to lead the organisation to success. Nando is expanding globally which shows the transformation and the instrument of domination is evident in the form of its economic power over suppliers and franchise.
